The difficulty curve is spot-on and I like how a password system is available to continue your progress. The bosses steal the show thanks to their clever patterns, though I do wish there was a more epic finale rather than you only needing to plough through the same foes you've already beaten. Honestly, while some run and gun/shoot em ups/arcade. The level design is expertly crafted to showcase your abilities resulting in some playful and intriguing gameplay. Metal Storm (Import) review Quite possibly the most fun game for the NES, wish it wasnt so underrated.

It does take a little while to adjust to the unconventional controls, but once you do it's so much fun pulling off more advanced techniques such as the Jump and Flip (launch off a ledge and then activate reverse gravity to reach the underside of the platform) and Distance Flip (again, using gravity to reach higher platforms) these give the action a neat puzzle-like element where you need to figure out how to manipulate gravity to reach a certain platform.

The gravity feature is perfectly implemented and creates some interesting gameplay in terms of you strategising on its usage, particularly as you can use it to move enemies to a more advantageous position for yourself. Gravity can also be flipped by pressing Up + A together, and if the Gravity Fireball power-up is active when travelling through the air you'll damage all enemies in your path. This is a game that desperately needed a small life bar. The single hit deaths also make the game rough. The later levels that allow you to exit both sides of the screen and can be hard to keep track of. While the game eases you into the gravity mechanic it will still cause random deaths. The B button fires your gun and power-ups can be collected that include a Shield Force (deflects bullets) and a Power Beam (increases the width of your shots). Metal Storm is brutally hard but in a good way.

The setting for Metal Storm took place at the start of the 26th century where players eventually learn that the solar system has been colonized. Metal Storm had pretty basic yet intriguing plot that involved players saving the Earth from destruction. The cover art and gameplay for Metal Storm had unique look especially since reminiscent of the Gundam franchise which began in 1979. Nintendo also had first party titles such as Super Mario Bros I-III, Zelda I-II and many others that were best sellers on the 8-bit NES console during the 80’s. But games like Metal Storm were definitely overshadowed on the NES by a variety of other titles produced by gaming companies like Capcom, Konami, Temco, etc. However, the NES was still somewhat of an attraction in the early 90’s despite Nintendo launched their 16-bit SNES console in 1990. Also, SNK released the Neo Geo AES back in ’90 which was a console that produced arcade quality gameplay. As many people know the NES console was starting to get old by the early 90’s especially after Sega released the 16-but Mega Drive console in 1988. Metal Storm was developed by Tamtex and published by Irem and was released exclusively for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1991. When it comes down to classic NES platformers titles like Metal Storm are often overlooked especially considering time it was released.
